We Are All Leaders

Those who guide this people mislead them,
and those who are guided are led astray.
Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men,
nor will he pity the fatherless and widows,
for everyone is ungodly and wicked,
every mouth speaks folly. – Isaiah 9:16-17

Today’s Reading: Isaiah 9-10; Ephesians 3

Being a leader is no joke.

People aspire to leadership roles for a multitude of reasons. Some folks want to help as many folks as they can in whatever given enterprise they are engaged in. Others simply want to get paid. Others want power. They love the feeling that they get when they can stand before a crowd of folk hanging on their every word.

But leadership is serious business.
It comes with heavy responsibilities. You are no longer merely responsible for yourself. You are responsible for the folks who follow you.

Sure, you may not have a following on the level of Jesus, or a King David, or the President. You may not even be the head of your household, company or business. But odds are that there is someone who is watching; someone who looks up to you who uses you as a model for what they want to become. Maybe it is a younger sibling or cousin. It could even be your friends, parents or teammates.

I’m not saying that you have to live your life constantly looking over your shoulder. What I am saying though is that we are all role models in some way, shape or form. Everyone is a leader and a follower, teacher and student, master and apprentice.

When we look at life this way it becomes all the more clear why we must live our lives with others in mind. We must do our best to spread love to those around us so that we can be a good example.

We are our brother’s keepers.

The more of us who do this, the better the next generation will become. And the better off we will be as they lead all of us into a better future.
