I'm Finally Starting to Get It

Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may live long in the land that the LORD swore to your forefathers to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. -Deuteronomy 11: 8-9

Am I the only one who things that Deuteronomy is starting to sound pretty redundant?

Love God, focus on God, remember God, don’t forget what God did for you and your forefathers.

But I’m finally starting to get it now. This book is a recap for Israel. They went through the generations of slavery in Egypt. They made it through forty years of wandering in the desert. And now they are just across the river from the land that was promised to the OG Godfather Abraham.

They are about to achieve their dream.

Have you ever watched those E! True Hollywood stories about celebrities who have fallen from grace?

The best ones I have seen are about the ones who fell and resurrected themselves somehow. They always have one of those “if I knew then what I knew now” moments that made them want to go back in time and smack their younger selves.

It seems like God is trying to prevent this from happening to Israel. He seems to be saying don’t forget what got you here.

That’s so very hard to do.

Greatness is being humble enough to know what got you where you are and the ability to stay true to that.

This will be important for all of us. As we move forward and reach each new milestone, take a moment to remember how you got there.

This is why I love those award show moments. For someone to reach the mountain top and declare to the world that God got them there… that’s such a profound statement.

It’s not just a statement of faith, but also a statement of humility and focus.

I’m taking notes.

Today’s Reading: Deuteronomy 11-13; Mark 12: 1-27
